The central Mesa Verde and the northern Rio Grande regions housed two of the densest populations of prehispanic Pueblo peoples in the North American Southwest. We plot incidence of violent trauma on human bone through time in each region. Such violence peaked in the mid-A.D. 1100s in the central Mesa Verde, and in general was higher through time there than in the northern Rio Grande region. In the central Mesa Verde, but not in the northern Rio Grande, there is a tendency for violence to be greater in periods of low potential maize produccción per capita and high variance in maize produccción, though these structural tendencies were on occasion overridden by historical factors such as the expansion and demise of the Chacoan polity and the regional depopulation. Violence generally declined through time in the northern Rio Grande until the arrival of the Spanish, even as populations increased. We propose that this decline was due to the combination of increased social span of polities, the importance of inter-Pueblo sodalities, the nature of religious practice, “gentle commerce,“ and increased adherence to a set of nonviolent norms.

We studied the ovipositional behavior of the citrus blackfly (CBF), Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby, and found several plant species (mango, pink trumpet, and kumquat) to be as attractive as Citrus spp to ovipositing CBF at low densities. There is a significant (P < 0.01) positive correlation between the attractiveness of various host plants in our tests and the frequency of CBF occurrence on these plants in field surveys The host range of CBF increases with increasing CBF density. Oviposition by CBF on preferred hosts appears to occur at all CBF densities and is independent of their frequency in the environment We also found that CBF adults appear to be attracted to plant material reflecting light in the 500–600 nm range and it appears that this is the only long-range attractant operative.

Fasciola hepatica secretes proteolytic enzymes and other molecules that are essential for host penetration and migration. This mixture may include enzymes required for the degradation of supramucosal gels, which defend epithelial surfaces against pathogen entry. These contain hydrated mucins that are heavily glycosylated. Excretory-secretory products (ES) from F. hepatica were examined for a range of glycosidase activities, using synthetic 4-methylumbelliferyl glycosides as substrates. The ES product contained at least 8 different glycosidase activities, the most abundant of which were β-N-acetylhexosaminidase, β-galactosidase and β-glucosidase. Alpha-fucosidase, β-glucuronidase, α-galactosidase, α-mannosidase and neuraminidase were also present. β-N-acetylhexosaminidase and β-galactosidase were present in multiple isoforms (at least 4), whereas β-glucosidase appeared to exist as one isoenzyme with a pI <3·8. All three enzymes had acidic pH optima (4·5–5·0). Ovine small intestinal mucin was degraded by ES at pH 4·5 or 7·0, with or without active cathepsin L, the major protease found in F. hepatica ES. The ability of F. hepatica ES to degrade mucin in the presence or absence of active cathepsin L suggests that cathepsin L is not essential for mucin degradation. The abundance of β-galactosidase and β-hexosaminidase in ES supports a role for these enzymes in mucin degradation.

The study of İznik ceramics of different periods revealed that temperatures of about 800–900°C were produced during firing. Glass fragments added to the body for strengthening resulted in the formation of fibrous minerals as clusters in the pores and protruding in the glaze together with Ca and P rich minerals in the raw materials used. The pore size distribution of the pores indicates a uniform temperature rise and fall during the production of the microstructure.

Summary
The Florida Scrub Jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens coerulescens) is a disjunct population of a species that otherwise inhabits western North America from Oregon and Colorado south to southern Mexico. Two other, largely Mexican species complete the genus Aphelocoma. The genus is unusually revealing for studying the evolution of cooperative breeding, because it contains closely related populations that exhibit varying degrees of sociality both between species and within species. The hypothesis that these differences are associated with different environmental and demographic conditions is central to most current work on social evolution in jays (Brown 1974, 1978; Woolfenden and Fitzpatrick 1984; Fitzpatrick and Woolfenden 1986).
The Scrub Jay is known to exhibit cooperative breeding only in the Florida population, where it occurs in scattered, often small populations, restricted to relict patches of oak scrub. This population has almost certainly been isolated from the vast western populations since at least the Pleistocene (Pitelka 1951). In contrast to the Florida population, Scrub Jays in the west disperse from the natal territory before reaching the age of one year. Here, we describe the social system of the Florida Scrub Jay, placing it in its environmental context as a means of emphasizing our interpretation of how the system evolved.
Study area and methods
Several hundred Florida Scrub Jays reside permanently on the property of the Archbold Biological Station, located in Highlands County near the southern terminus of the central Florida hill country (known as the Lake Wales Ridge).
